What You Need
to Know...
Sea ducks are ocean going birds, common in the Pamlico Sound, as they prefer
the deep salt water of the ocean and coastal bays. Large numbers of Oldsquaws (long
tailed ducks) and three types scooters winter in our area. While hunting Sea
duck, forget anything you know
about duck hunting. Think of the blind or boat as your fort, and you are there to
defend it. Sea duck come in low and fast, very fast and most often leave the
same way. One of the biggest problems is seeing the ducks. They can approach
from any direction. Most of the birds arrive below the horizon. You have to spot
dark ducks against dark water, while dealing with choppy conditions and/or sun glare. They go
from full flight to a splash or crash landing in a second. If you like fast-paced action in your face, sea duck hunting may be for you-bring plenty of
non-toxic ammo, firing up to 100 rounds per outing. There is currently a seven
sea bird limit, in addition to your other duck limits.
